Writing Rule #21

#21  Don’t waste time, mine or yours or anybody elses.  Write something new, something different.  if you don’t, somewhere in the process, you’re going to bore the pants off someone, be it the editor, the editor’s husband/wife, the slush readers, or, if the editors are wearing suspenders or a really tight belt or (shudder) lycra, or something, their pants will stay on regardless and you’ll bore the pants off of me, when I buy the magazine and wonder why the hell you’re so boring and where the hell my pants are.  If you aren’t going to add anything new to the established mythos and ideas and can’t avoid the obvious tropes and clichés, you are wasting my time.  Don’t.
